As the 2012 BCS National Championship is playing in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome fans inside and in the immediate area who are also subscribers of AT&T wireless can rest assured that there voice, text and data traffic will be completed. AT&T has recently unveiled a major network expansion utilizing the Distributed Antenna System (DAS). The 10 million dollar investment in DAS technology will help relieve the strain and congestion on surrounding AT&T cell towers during game day and times of peak congestion. BY utilizing DAS technology the benefits of added network coverage will not stop with AT&T. Other wireless providers, once setup and configured, can also utilize it to provide better network coverage and increased capacity to there particular networks. No specifics could be gathered at this time as to who else will be utilizing the network but I am sure other wireless carriers are eager to step in and take advantage of the system. Installation of the system is not just a sporting event gimmick either. AT&T has shown a lasting commitment to New Orleans with this upfront capital investment and ten year agreement with the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Chad Townes, AT&T Vice President of Antenna Solutions said " the installation of the DAS Technology in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome is the largest deployment in the country".

The Mercedes-Benz Superdome has a listed football seating capacity of 76,468 (expanded) or 69,703 (not expanded), a maximum basketball seating capacity of 55,675, and a maximum baseball capacity of 63,525. These number of course don't reflect the crowds gathered outside of the arena. Network engineers probably have nightmares about the challenges of bringing mobile broadband coverage to so many people in such a confined space. With the help of DAS those network engineers can breath a little bit easier and sports fan can get back to cheering on there favorite teams. In describing the abilities of the system Chad Townes had this to say " The DAS system has 205 carrier sectors of traffic with each carrier able to handle 100 call or more at any given time."
